GDC 2009: Infamous Hands-On

When last we saw Infamous, information technology looked to be an intriguing take on the third-person legal action genre, with wide-ingenuous environments and an electrically-charged superpower-wielding protagonist. And leading man Cole MacGrath'd electrically-charged powers are a refreshing change of pace from the usual categorization of guns that usually flummox served up in a game of this ilk. Lobbing balls of electrical energy that explode the likes of grenades? Awesome. Refilling your electrical charge by grinding across power lines and sucking generators dry? Besides awesome. The game's karma system? Well, that's where I begin to wonder.

If you'Ra feeling lazy, here's the short version: you'Re the sole survivor of a good time that laid waste to a vast division of the city, merely you're stuck in a section that's been walled off and quarantined. At any rat, information technology's a good thing that you've got those superpowers, because without them, you'd be crispen.

Being the super-powered guy that He is, Cole has the choice of being a virtuous hero, an infamous villain, or somewhere in between. At a dozen or so different points in the game, Cole will exist faced with a choice, and his decision will push his karma meter in same direction or the other. The karmic choices aren't exactly what you'd call delicate, either. At one point, Cole gains control of a payload of food that's been dropped into the quarantine zone. You tooshie either dea it with the other residents, or prevent it all for yourself and lease them starve. Not exactly a good deal of gray expanse with a option like that.

It's non that the good and evil paths are so blatant that concerns me, though — we've certainly seen to a higher degree extraordinary biz go that route and even be loads of amusive (Fabrication, I'm looking squarely in your steering). The problem lies in how karma affects your powers. Your karma meter has trey levels in either management, good or evil. Which sounds most right for a superhero, I theorize, simply it besides sounds a little dull. The common people at Sucker Lick admitted that acting through the game is far easier when you're demonic, and from the small bit I played, IT seems like it would beryllium more playfulness, too.
